Program Overview
The PhD in International Development program is designed to prepare students to tackle complex global issues related to development, with a particular focus on economic growth, poverty reduction, better governance, sustainable development, quality of life improvements, and stronger human rights in the poorer and less-developed countries of the world. Our program is interdisciplinary in nature, drawing on fields such as economics, political science, agriculture, sociology, nutrition, anthropology, market systems, geography, and history, to provide a comprehensive understanding of the complexities of development.
Our PhD International Development program is characterized by its rigorous curriculum, which is designed to provide a strong foundation in theoretical analysis, research methodology, and practical experience. The program duration is three years and in the first year, students take specialized course works that provide strong overview of the field of international development and explore key themes such as poverty, inequality, governance, sustainability, global health, environmental policy, conflict and development, gender and development, and development finance. Year One also include courses on research methods, including qualitative and quantitative methods, data analysis and research design.
Year Two and Three are devoted to active research and fieldworks under the supervisory guidance of academic though leaders in the field of international development. Our faculty members are leaders in their respective fields and provide students with mentorship and guidance throughout their studies.

RESEARCH GROUPS

Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems Group: The focus of this group is on researches related to the development and implementation of sustainable farming practices, reducing food waste, and ensuring food security in a rapidly changing global environment.
Farmers Livelihood and Performance Improvements Group: The focus of this group is on Understanding variations in farm business performance, sustainability of agricultural production, processes efficiency and improving profitability of agribusiness operations
Agribusiness trade and Market Analysis Group: The focus of this group is on researches related to the global trade of agricultural products, including market trends, market access, investments, trade policies, and the economic impact of trade agreements on the global agribusiness industry.
Agricultural Policy and Rural Development Group: The focus of this group is on researches related to the development and implementation of agricultural policies, rural development, and the impact of these policies on farmers, rural communities, and the industry as a whole.
Digital Transformation in Agribusiness Group: The focus of this research group is on the ways in which digital technologies are impacting the agribusiness industry, including Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Data Analytics, Robotics, Precision agriculture, Digital supply chain management and logistics, Digital financial services, and Digital marketplaces.
