FOBMAS Had a Round-Table with the University Chancellor

Prof. Olusola Ladokun, the Dean, Faculty of Basic Medical and Applied Sciences (FOBMAS) of the University played her leadership role as she led other members of the faculty to a round-table discussion with the Chancellor of our great citadel of learning, Prof. Gabriel Ogunmola on the 23rd of January, 2020.

Prof. Ogunmola, a distinguished Professor of Chemistry formerly of Universities of Ibadan, Nigeria, Harvard, USA, and Stanford, USA, is the former president of the Nigerian Academy of Science.

Prof. Ogunmola reiterated that most staff in the FOBMAS are highly qualified scientists, whose research ideas and concepts are “marketable”. He shed light on fertile areas of research collaborations and he encouraged them to form a ‘formidable research team’ so that together they can achieve a lot more in their chosen profession.

Earlier in her welcome address, Prof. Ladokun appreciated the Chancellor, who out of his busy schedule deemed it necessary to attend the said round-table discussion. She later said that the round-table discussion will be done every semester; hence she encouraged all the staff to use the opportunity available to them to advance the course of the University.

The round-table came to an end when Prof. Ogunmola presented a ceremonial bottle of Champagne; to be popped “upon winning a grant” either by a member of staff or as a team. Heads of departments, the Faculty Manager, other lecturers and laboratory technicians of FOBMAS were present during the event.

Take-aways from the VC’s Meeting with Postgraduate Students of LCU

The Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Kabiru Aderemi Adeyemo again displayed his acumen as an astute university administrator when he had a meeting with the teeming Postgraduate Students of the University. The well advertised meeting was held at the main bowl of the University’s International Conference Centre on the 24th day of January, 2020. The importance of the meeting can never be over-emphasized as a lot of matters were discussed. The V.C, accompanied by the University Registrar, Dr. (Mrs.) Oyebola Ayeni MNIM, and the Dean of the Postgraduate School; Prof. Afolakemi Oredein, appreciated the students for pitching their tents with the University. The VC openly lay bare what it takes to be a postgraduate student of Lead City University, and also informed the students about the policies of the University as regards the processes of application, admission and registration. The meeting was graced by the attendance of the University’s Pro-chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Prof. Jide Owoeye.  In his remarks, Prof. Owoeye was emphatic about the mode of operations of the University. He said that the University operates an open-door policy and encouraged any student who is in doubt about anything to approach the university management.

Matters such as project supervision, examination and registration were exhaustively discussed. Some students asked questions as to some of the unknown issues about the University, and satisfactory responses were provided by the Vice Chancellor and the Pro-chancellor.

However, the Pro-chancellor frowned at some heads of departments who are in the habit of insisting on how and who supervises a research student. “No HOD should dictate to any student how he or she is to carry out their researches”. The choice of who supervises a student is “purely the student’s choice and if any student finds it difficult working with a supervisor, he/she is at liberty to choose a more comfortable person to carry out the supervision” he further stressed.

The students in their responses were truly happy and satisfied and they unanimously promised that they will comply with all the rules and regulations of the University. The VC wishes the students success in their forth-coming examinations. The meeting was well attended by postgraduate students and their lecturers.
